The biggest, most exciting new movie and TV trailers this week.

We live in a golden age of entertainment, with great new movies and TV shows being released all the time. There’s so much, in fact, that it can be hard to keep track of what’s coming, and what to get excited about.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of the biggest and best trailers released this week. And there are some real gems in there, featuring everything from superheroes to sinners to… Santa Claus?

Movies

Thunderbolts*

In cinemas May 2025

The MCU has taken a bit of a bashing recently, with a slew of critically-panned TV shows (Secret Invasion) and underperforming movies (The Marvels), but after a fairly quiet year - mega-hit Deadpool & Wolverine aside - the studio that once dominated the box office is looking to come out swinging in 2025.

Marvel’s first proper team-up movie since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Thunderbolts* (the asterisk is still a mystery) details the formation of a group of washed-up antiheroes, led by Black Widow’s sister and fellow assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh).

Pulling together a disparate group of ex-villains and generally nefarious types from previous Marvel properties - including the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) - as well as new character Sentry, a Superman-esque figure with a dark side, this looks to be a lot of fun.

And, quite possibly, a bit of a return to form for the MCU. We’ll find out for sure in May 2025, when this is finally released.

Sinners

In cinemas 7th March 2025

Described as a ‘new vision of fear’, the new film from acclaimed director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) sees him tackle full-on horror for the first time.

The plot is still a bit of a mystery, but the official synopsis promises a story about a pair of troubled twin brothers (both played by Michael B Jordan) who return to their hometown, only to find a ‘greater evil’ waiting for them. And with all the talk of demons and magic in the trailer, it seems that this evil is probably of the supernatural variety.

Regardless, what little we’ve seen so far looks thrilling and intense, and Coogler reteaming with his on-screen muse Jordan is definitely something to get excited about. Also stars Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Wunmi Mosaku (Loki).

Rumours

In cinemas 18th October 2024

A surreal, satirical comedy, described as ‘Night of the Living Dead meets Dr Strangelove’ - a mashup that I’m sure nobody saw coming.

Rumours tells the story of the leaders of the seven wealthiest democracies in the world, headed by the incomparable Cate Blanchett (Don’t Look Up), who get together at the annual G7 summit to draft a provisional statement on a global crisis, only to be blindsided by a bizarre, apocalyptic situation involving reanimated corpses and giant brains.

This looks like nothing else released this year - weird, hilarious, stylistically experimental and, actually, a lot of fun. And it comes out soon, too!

Mickey 17

In cinemas 31st January 2025

The latest film from Bong Joon Ho, the acclaimed director of Parasite, this satirical, utterly bonkers sci-fi comedy looks to be more in line with his earlier offerings, like Snowpiercer and Okja.

Based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton (it remains to be seen why Bong added an additional ten Mickeys to his adaptation), this takes us into the world of an ‘expendable’ (Robert Pattinson, The Batman): a maintenance worker who is assigned the most dangerous tasks, and who is cloned and replaced every time he dies on the job.

It’s a setup with some great potential for both comedy and drama, and given Bong’s track record in both of these areas, Mickey 17 is sure to be one to watch. Also stars Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker), Steven Yeun (Minari), Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things).

Red One

In cinemas 15th November 2024

Let’s just get this out of the way up front: yes, this movie is real.

When Santa Claus (JK Simmons, Whiplash) is abducted by nefarious forces right before the big day, the world’s best tracker (Chris Evans, Captain America: The First Avenger) must team up with the North Pole’s head of security (Dwayne Johnson, Black Adam) to find him and bring him home.

It sounds ridiculous - and it is - but this actually looks like a lot of fun. It’s directed by Jake Kasdan, who had great success with the way-better-than-they-should-have-been Jumanji sequels, and everyone involved seems to be in on the joke.

There’s also some fun stuff with giant-sized toys, anthropomorphic polar bears and evil snowmen - not to mention Krampus (Kristofer Hivju, Game of Thrones). This may not end up being a Christmas classic, but it should at the very least be a good time at the movies.

Blitz

On Apple TV+ 22nd November 2024

They say every great director will, at some point in their career, make a great war movie, and this might just be Steve McQueen’s. The acclaimed director of 12 Years a Slave, Shame and Widows is turning his sights on World War II, focussing in on the home front.

It’s a relatively small-scale story - a boy (newcomer Elliott Heffernan) and his mother (Saoirse Ronan, Little Women), separated during the Blitz, must find their way back to each other - delivered in an epic package, sure to be packed with emotion and some powerful performances.

McQueen rarely puts a foot wrong, so this is definitely one to check out when it’s released in November.

A Real Pain

In cinemas this autumn

Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) writes, directs and stars in this comedy drama about two American cousins who embark on a European road trip to reconnect with their roots.

Already getting a lot of buzz after festival screenings, A Real Pain promises complex characters, some excellent odd couple comedy and real heart. Not to mention a barnstorming performance from Kieran Culkin (Succession).

TV Shows

The second thing in this list starring Cate Blanchett and, weirdly, the second with an unexplained asterisk in its title.

Adapted from the best-selling novel by Renée Knight, Disclaimer* tells the story of journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett), who has built a career exposing the misdeeds of the powerful. But when she suddenly finds her own dark secrets being revealed, she must confront her past and figure out who is exposing them.

This is the latest project from Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) and features a stacked cast, including Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog).

The Office

On Prime Video 18th October

Alright, hear me out.

Yes, the original Office, starring Ricky Gervais and Martin Freeman, was a classic of British ultra-cringe comedy. And yes, the US remake, starring Steve Carell and John Krasinski, is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.

These are certainly big shoes to fill, and this first trailer might give you the impression that the new Australian version is going to be little more than a pale imitation. But maybe it’ll be good?

And if not… well, at least the US Office is available to watch on Netflix, and both that and the UK original are available on Sky. It’s never a bad time for a rewatch.
