History of the Club World Cup

Established in 2000, the FIFA Club World Cup has traditionally featured a small group of continental champions competing for global supremacy.

While it started in 2000, there was no edition between 2001 to 2004 due to a combination of factors. But from 2004, it ran yearly at the end of every calendar year up until 2023, when it was decided they’d revamp the competition.

The 2025 edition marks a significant evolution, expanding to 32 teams and adopting a format similar to the FIFA World Cup. It will also change from being a yearly competition to a quadrennial, just like the standard World Cup.

This change aims to increase competitiveness and global representation, making the tournament a more inclusive and prestigious event in the football calendar.
